Population trends in Switzerland

Since 1860, the Swiss population has skyrocketed: from 2,515 millions to 7,866 millions in 2010, of which 1,766 millions are foreigners (BFS 2010; Räumliche Verteilungs Abb. 55). From the end of the Second World War, the immigration accounts for an important part of the population, compensating for the decreasing natural growth rate and helping to rejuvenate the population.
