To achieve the conference cycle “Visions pour Genève” organised in 2007 by the BFA in the occasion of its twenty years of existence, this publication seeks to understand the territorial dynamics at work in the franco-valdo-genevan region. The “Grand Genève” is analysed from different point of views: identity, institutions, politics, economics as well as ecology, mobility, integration city/countryside, governance. This sustainable approach is justified by facts.
Despite the integration of sustainable development principles within the instruments of cantonal and communal planning, urban development is a major issue in Geneva: housing construction at a dead end; lack of big projects; sprawl of the landscape; procedural slowness; popular oppositions; appeals by the associations (very few) and by the individuals (many).
For a better understanding of the spatial logics at work, but also to show and valorise the pluralism which the city is made of, this work unites contributions from different social worlds: from academic researchers, specialists of territorial studies and representatives of associations. By fusing heterogeneous points of view, the result is a hybrid object, with the hope that the juxtaposition of perspectives will contribute to foster reflection and action in Geneva.
