For many years, researches on durability have led to some kind of consensus concerning the necessity of urban densification. Each year, however, innumerable peri-urban residences keep being built in contradiction with most principles of durability. In a context characterised by a rapidly transforming family structure and by the emergency of a society whose life keeps getting longer, it seems necessary to interrogate ourselves regarding the stakes and the potential of this type of housing [flyer].
Emmanuel Rey is a professor at the Laboratoire d’architecture et technologies durables (LAST) of the EPFL. He is also a partner of the Bauart office in Bern, Neuchâtel and Zurich.
